Camel Joe

A True Bit Of Historical Trivia...

The hunt was tough,
Pouring over encyclopedic drawings and camels stuffed,
Looking fruitlessly through picture books and such,
Never finding a camel that wasn’t rough.

Barnum & Bailey came into town,
They had Ol’ Joe, a dromedary…mean and proud.

They went to look…he seemed dumpy like the rest,
Whacked him with a big stick…
His head and neck reared up…looking his very best.

“That’s the one” they said as the shutter clicked,
Upon the cigarette pack Ol’ Joe went,
Forever standing in an Egyptian dream,
A mascot for smokes…since nineteen thirteen.
