Roads To May

I asked for your hand,
Small was the ring but you accepted,
One on the way as we walked down the road,
Nothing more was said when we couldn't handle the load.

Then you came and I bought two bands,
Hurried plans were laid, alas, the moment passed,
I wanted so to walk the road again,
Someone came between us and I spoke my harsh goodbyes.

Your forbidden love was given,
Fire red hair lying across my lap as you said "I love you",
Leaving one for me, I thought this road was true,
In the end the fire faded as bursts of passion often do.

I lost you because I played the fool,
Forgetting myself to pursue a lust that was untrue,
I still remember asking as our souls became one,
Your strawberry hair glistening with love's sweet dew.

I asked you in September, not so long ago,
Broke my heart and blocked the road with pain,
Engaged for All Hallows Eve but we didn't find the way,
I sit and reminisce, looking back on my life in May.
